Haley's Hike at Providence Canyon
Taking your camera on any adventure is worth it. Capturing simple moments like hiking the Providence Canyon State Park with your husband on THE HOTTEST day ever, sweating to death, but laughing the whole way is priceless.
Nathan and I started our adventure early morning making the long trek from Newnan, GA to Lumpkin Ga…which ended up being close to two hours away down a straight two lane road. It takes a while to get there so make sure you allow yourself a full afternoon. We debated to just keep going because by that point we were halfway to the beach, but that’s beside the point.
Once we arrived there was a small outpost that has some trail maps, bathrooms, park information, and picnic areas in some nice shade. At that point you can look over the rim of the canyon and get a pretty nice view of the area you are about to explore. We chose to do the 3-mile trail that leads you to the bottom of canyons 1-9.

You start out for the most part heading straight down to the bottom of the canyon. There are a lot of trees that obstruct your view at the bottom however, once you follow the off trail paths to the actual canyon walls you can get a better picture of just how massive these mini mountains are.
In a lot of these pictures you can see the size of the canyon, the colors of the walls, and just how different the various trails to the canyons are. The odd thing about getting to the bottom of the canyon is that you have to walk up a very shallow stream of water and Georgia red clay sand to reach the walls. We highly recommend wearing some shoes you don’t mind getting pretty dirty or some hiking boots so you won’t slip.
Our favorite spots were canyons 3-5 because they seemed to be the largest. Here are some pictures of the large canyons below.

Overall, the trip took about 3 hours round trip. It could have taken less time but we stopped a lot for photos, many water breaks because of the harsh humidity down in the canyon, and for lunch of course. It was a wonderful day trip with a lot of scenic outlooks and some romantic sunset spots. If you have some extra time this summer and make the trip! It is a rare natural wonder right the middle of Georgia!
